Nico Paz: 'Nights like this are why I wanted to stay at Como'

Nico Paz has confessed that he chose to remain with Como precisely for moments like the club's historic 4-1 triumph over RB Leipzig in their inaugural Champions League fixture. The triumphant match took place at the Stadio Sinigaglia, which underwent renovations over the summer to meet UEFA's standards.

This groundbreaking occasion saw Como secure a commanding victory, with all goals contributed by players who were part of the squad last season, thereby earning their place in this elite tournament. Martin Baturina initiated the scoring and later provided an assist for Tasos Douvikas. Following the break, Assane Diao and substitute Maxi Perrone sealed the comprehensive win, with Andrija Maksimovic's impressive strike being the sole response from Leipzig.

Nico Paz's Commitment to Como

"It was an historic night, we played an incredible game, and we were so eager for this match. We are truly delighted," Nico Paz shared with Sky Sport Italia. "It was precisely for nights like this that I wanted to stay. I knew this was the place where I would experience the most growth, and I am very content with my decision. I made the right choice."

Despite Real Madrid retaining a buy-back option, its terms have been significantly adjusted since last summer, underscoring the Argentina international's firm resolve to continue his development at the Stadio Sinigaglia.

Como stands as the sole Italian team to achieve a victory on Matchday 1 of the Champions League, as Inter and Napoli both suffered defeats, and Roma was held to a 1-1 draw by Fenerbahce. Many of Como's players were making their European competition debuts, let alone in the most prestigious tournament, yet they appeared unfazed by the magnitude of the occasion.

"Baturina is an exceptional player. He recognized the space available to exploit Leipzig and performed remarkably," Nico Paz continued. "We had to defend more in the second half, especially with a 3-1 lead. I'm not sure where I found the energy for that assist in the final minutes, but I dug deep!"

Despite contributing two assists, Fabio Capello, speaking from the Sky Sport Italia studio, suggested that Nico Paz might not have been at peak fitness. "It was a challenging match because I was consistently man-marked by their Number 27, which created openings for my teammates. I didn't receive the ball as frequently as usual, though I had a bit more possession after halftime. Of course, I can always perform better."
