Gasperini: 'Roma's draw in Istanbul could be crucial for Champions League progression'

Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini expressed satisfaction with the 1-1 draw against Fenerbahce in the Champions League, stating that securing a point away from home can be highly significant for their standing and overall campaign objectives.

The Italian side dominated possession in Istanbul and initially took the lead through Bryan Cristante's well-placed shot from the edge of the box. However, as the match progressed, Roma's energy levels dipped, forcing goalkeeper Mile Svilar into several crucial saves before Archie Brown equalized with a dinked finish.

Gasperini Highlights Positives Despite Defensive Slip-ups

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Gasperini acknowledged the challenging atmosphere and Fenerbahce's defensive approach, which relied on quick counter-attacks. "It was a good performance, but it wasn't easy in this atmosphere and against a team that, despite being on home turf, clammed up in defence and tried to go on the counter with their quick forwards," he commented.

"I think we played very well. At the end of the day, a point can be important for the table. We need draws too in order to achieve our targets."

Brown's equalizer exposed a vulnerability in Roma's defense, highlighting their struggles in tracking off-the-ball movement from the Fenerbahce attackers. "We certainly made the wrong movement in defence, but this happens sometimes when we’re too deep. It’s actually better when we are attacking and pushing in their half," the coach admitted.

He added, "It is something we definitely need to work on, because we cannot always push forward, especially in this competition, at times we will be on the back foot. It was a mistake in our defensive movement."

Regarding the substitutions, Gasperini suggested that while not all players made an immediate impact, some performed well. "I don’t think so. Leonardo Balerdi came on very well, so did Nahuel Molina. It wasn’t easy for Niccolò Pisilli. Maybe Rodrigo Mora struggled, I put him on to make the most of his pace, but it was tough to find him between the lines. I introduced Marten De Roon when we needed to just bring home the result. I thought everyone had the right approach."

Gasperini also addressed the recurring issue of conceding early in the second half, a pattern observed in their recent Serie A match against Atalanta. "When it happens twice, that’s an indication. Not everything in football is explicable, sometimes it is a fluke, but from the next game we must be more focused," he concluded.
