Lille President Létang Fined for Inflammatory Referee Messages

Lille President Olivier Létang has been fined €20,000 by the League's disciplinary committee. The sanction follows inflammatory messages and emails directed at French referees after the Lille-PSG match on August 27th, which ended 2-2.

Létang faced a potential nine-month suspension. The incident occurred after a late equalizer conceded by Lille, which Létang attributed to excessive added time managed by referee Eric Wattelier. Initial protests occurred in the stadium corridors, with Wattelier's report stating Létang "shouted scandal" and claimed "it's always the same."

Following this, Létang sent messages and emails. On August 28th, he wrote to the National Refereeing Director: "I warned you! It's shameful!" The National Ethics Council flagged these communications. A second email followed on August 29th, sent to the same director with copies to FFF and LFP officials. In it, Létang criticized the "lightness and lack of judgment in choosing referees" and stated, "We can no longer accept being refereed by this person. I wrote to you twice. It's very, very, very serious!" He further warned, "If this person is named again for a match of our club, we reserve the right not to show up or not to organize the match. We will rationally explain this choice to the public." A third email that day questioned, "Who will pay for this? Who will fix this?... Dear Mr. Director of Arbitration, where are you?... I know we won't get an answer. It's logical when you don't know what to answer. You can't explain the inexplicable... nor justify the unjustifiable... I nevertheless confirm that we will never accept Mr. Wattelier as a referee for one of our matches again."

These repeated accusations put Létang at risk of a multi-month ban, as per FFF disciplinary regulations defining intimidating behavior. Ultimately, he received a €20,000 fine. Lille coordinator Sylvain Armand was given a suspended one-match ban for his conduct during the same match.
