Manchester City Knew of Billions Fraud Guilt Before Lavish Transfer Spending

Manchester City was aware of its guilt in 114 financial rule breaches in the Premier League since this summer. This knowledge did not stop the club from spending outrageously during the transfer window.

The announcement, days after multiple media outlets reported the news, caused a stir. Yet, Manchester City was already informed. This Tuesday, the Premier League confirmed the club committed 'serious' financial infractions between 2009 and 2018, concealing over a billion euros from oversight. The English giant, owned by an Emirati fund, denies these accusations. According to ESPN sources close to the matter, the club's management knew of this since the beginning of summer.

The club's response? An aggressive strategy during the summer transfer window, bringing in seven top-tier recruits to the Etihad Stadium for over £450 million. Notable signings included Enzo Fernandez and Elliot Anderson, the club's two most expensive acquisitions, along with Ayyoub Bouaddi. The transfer window proved successful sportingly, with City winning all seven of their matches across competitions this season under Enzo Maresca.

Club Claims Innocence

The Sky Blues, 'surprised and disappointed' by the decision, asserted their innocence on Tuesday and stated their intention to appeal before the Friday, October 2nd deadline. The club declared it would be uncompromising and, if necessary, proactive before all competent regulatory and judicial bodies. They argue that the Premier League's proceedings are ongoing, and critical elements have not yet been examined. Manchester City believes the notification contains clear material errors in law, principle, and fact, rendering it unreliable. The club insists it scrupulously followed procedures for eight years, expecting the Premier League's board and management to act as an independent, impartial, and fair regulatory authority, free from partisan influence.

A sanction is yet to be imposed, with the Premier League not specifying a date. Potential penalties range from financial penalties and transfer bans to points deductions, potentially leading to relegation, or even exclusion from the league.

Since its acquisition in 2008 by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, City has become a European football powerhouse, securing, among other accolades, eight league titles and their first Champions League in 2023.
