Arteta: Arsenal Deserved More Against Napoli in Narrow 1-0 Champions League Win

Mikel Arteta expressed that the "result does not reflect" Arsenal's performance in their 1-0 Champions League victory over Napoli, stating, "They made things very difficult for us."

The Gunners extended their flawless start to the season, having secured victories in their initial three Premier League fixtures. They also achieved a clean sheet in their Champions League opener at the Stadio Maradona.

Despite dominating possession in Naples, it was a moment of brilliance from Martin Ødegaard that broke the deadlock. His curling shot from the edge of the box was tipped onto the inside of the far post by Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić.

Arteta Praises Arsenal's Patience

Arteta shared his satisfaction with his team's display, telling Amazon Prime Video Italia and Sky Sport Italia, "Arsenal were fantastic, I really enjoyed the performance."

"I was impressed by everyone’s desire to give their all against a very difficult opponent," he continued. "The result does not reflect what we saw on the field, as we could’ve won by many more goals, but I am happy anyway, because it is not easy to win here."

Arsenal recorded 25 shots on goal and completed 580 passes, significantly more than Napoli's 400.

Reflecting on their Champions League Final appearance last season, where they were narrowly defeated by Paris Saint-Germain on penalties, Arteta was asked if the competition was their primary target this time.

"We’ve just started, but there is a good record in the tournament. We put in a fine performance and deserved to win today. Napoli have players who make things very difficult for us."

The remarkable defensive record that underpinned Arsenal's success in the Premier League last season was also a point of discussion.

"It’s not a secret, it’s the consequence of our work," Arteta responded. "Their desire to win the ball back every time we lose it is incredible, the players want to improve every day."

The Gunners are often noted for their deliberate tempo and patience in waiting for opportune moments, a style somewhat unusual in England.

"Every time you lose the ball and allow a counter-attack, it’s a possibility, but you need to take risks against a side like Napoli and it paid off. Last season was very difficult, but we have to just keep working every day."
