Inter Milan is reportedly maintaining a strict approach to spending due to Oaktree Capital Management's preparations to sell the Serie A club. This strategic financial control is seen as a move to prepare the team for a profitable sale.
Oaktree, an American investment fund, had initially provided a loan to the previous owners, Suning. When Suning defaulted on the repayment terms, Oaktree effectively took ownership of the club in the summer of 2024. The fund's stated intention from the outset was to stabilize Inter, reduce its debts, and increase revenue with the ultimate goal of selling the club for a profit.
According to reports from the Corriere della Sera newspaper, this planned divestment is drawing nearer, with Oaktree now believed to be initiating the process of identifying potential buyers. The fund has demonstrably stabilized the club's financial situation, achieving a net positive revenue-to-cost balance for two consecutive years. This is a significant turnaround, especially considering Inter's €245 million loss in the aftermath of the pandemic in 2021.
Furthermore, the club's debt has been successfully restructured, and plans are underway for the construction of a new stadium, which will be shared with rivals AC Milan. While not an immediate imperative, the prospect of selling Inter has always been a core part of Oaktree's strategy. Consequently, they are focused on maintaining sound financial accounts and are likely to exercise restraint in the transfer market this summer.
